- You may have arrived here after looking for an educational website. This one concerns lack of professionalism within a primary school in England.
- It is entirely anonymous so that anyone connected to the school and is not part of the story is free from anything negative.
- This website is an account of a primary school reaching out to its local community for volunteers.
- The website is anonymous in order to protect its standing with its community.
- The main problem described arose mainly due to not having enough classoom accomodation for anyone offering more than help with reading.
- A further problem arose once this volunteer had started. It centred on the Board of Governors not fulfilling its responsibility at law to provide volunteers with safeguarding training.
- It should have checked that the Head Teacher - HT - had carried out safeguarding training for all staff with any form of contact with pupils.
- The Board of Governors - BoG - appealed to residents in April 2022 to volunteer their time and expertise to help in the current time of need.
- On 12 July 2023, the Head Teacher - HT - and I discussed the situation. I offered to help with science teaching. HT suggested the formation of a Science Club.
- I said that I could attend once per fortnight for 40-minute sessions.
- The last week of the Summer Term was devoted to a Science Week and I was able to start acclimatising.
- Pupils in groups had chosen a science topic and enjoyed showing visitors what they had learned.
- During the summer vacation I prepared a lot of teaching aids including a portable train track - 4ft square.
- I attended after school on 8 September to look at resources.
- The first session on 20 September went well. However, the security checks had not finished and the Science Teacher - ST - sat in a corner.
- In the normal situation, the host - ST - would thank the visitor - V - and make comment. Nothing.
-
- Two weeks later I was put in the Resource Centre. It is a corridor for the playground and a fire escape route.
- The session was unsuccesful (understatement) due to pupils rushing through to the playground.
- Pupils who (established later) were in the leaver group remarked that they wanted to use the train track and be members of the club.
- I arrived for the third session on 18 October when no pupils attended. ST arrived later to say she had sent me an email saying everything was cancelled. I replied that I had not seen it due to loading the car.
- I asked ST what was I supposed to do with the train set. Actually, it was the second set and more portable.
- HT and I discussed the situation at 0800 on 20 October when I pointed out that she knew at the first discussion that there was a timetabling crisis due to the lack of classroom availability.
- HT was informed that I had had no safeguarding training which the law demands.
- HT explained that the school is under governmental pressure to take on more and more.
- I later set out to establish what this entails and wrote to local education officials. No reply.
- I had sent emails to the BoG Chair before the latest dated 29 November. She replied saying this was the first email she had received. I replied asking her to respond on or before 16 December.
